Dear Mrs.Boutilier :

For my capstone project, I've decided to work with a non-profit organization called “Junior Achievement “, that goes to schools all across Connecticut and teaches kids in grades K-12 work readiness and entrepreneurship skills. Not only do I work as a volunteer at the schools, but I also work behind the scenes in preparing kits, sorting lesson plans, and more. I go to Junior Achievement on Tuesdays and Thursdays for now and after February 8th I will expand my days to Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays. So far I’ve started to work with Junior Achievement in October, working behind the scenes by preparing kits, breaking down lesson plans and more. This topic is interesting to me because I want to also be able to learn and provide my friends and family with financial information to help them out.

As time goes on I hope to find out “How financially prepared are graduating students?”. At times I feel adults would be better prepared for the real world, if they were taught work skills, how to handle money and entrepreneurship earlier in life. The non profit company I'm working with allows adults and teens get the experience to teach kids from kindergarten to seniors in high school real world experiences. Once these kids learn these ideas and skills they’ll always remember what they learned. Although I'm unable to see in the future if the kids have learned and stuck with these skills at the end of each lesson or at the end of each  “JA in A Day” I can ask the kids questions about the things they’ve learned in the day.

My mentor is one of the educational department workers, Sumayya Ayoub. She is an employee at Junior Achievement and has worked and grown there for many years. She has also been one of the volunteers and is one of the leads on the educational department. As I work with Junior Achievement my stretch is going to be to public speaking because like most people that I know public speaking is not our favorite thing to do, there’s always the fear of messing up or not doing something the correct way.

Sincerely,

Da’Naisha Richards
