RESEARCH

Before doing research I assumed the obvious, most people are struggling with money issues because they don’t know the skills of how to handle money correctly. I found out the reason why most schools don’t teach these skills starting in elementary school or even starting in any grade has to do with the decision of the state. As time goes one more and more states are trying to get out of debt but they continue to make wrong financial decisions. These states are beginning to pass laws that require students to take some type of financial course (washingtonpost.com). The country as a whole has experienced so many financial issues because we tend to “borrow” more than we can give back. The issue is that the states within America also tend to buy more than they can borrow or spend the money on unnecessary things. The people of these states in turn suffer if they get laid off or schools have limits on afterschool activities and school equipment and supplies they used to give out.
Connection:
For my project I wanted to help start the process of teaching financial literacy early on and teach them how to manage with the amount they have and if they have more, teach them how to save. Preparing kids for real world expenses and how not to borrow more than they can give ia important. I agree with the 95% of people in the states that say financial literacy should begin in grades k-12. With Junior Achievement I've helped create lesson plans, organize games and materials to help students better understand the importance of financial literacy and why it’s such a good thing to have when you get older and begin to handle money. Kids all over connecticut were able to get a hands on experience on what it’s like to have money and to save or spend it wisely. This had such a huge impact on kids, so much so that they were able to go home and tell their parents about taxes.
